I already have Laser Musket as my slow weapon, so I don't really need another slow energy weapon to my inventory. My own plan is to advance in Commando, just to turn my laser rifle to automatic weapon. Automatic weapons are very useful in such situation, especially in Survival mode. However, you can't always prevent raiders, synths, ghouls and robots from swarming you. This is why most people (including myself) favor singe shot weapon and longer reach. Automatic weapons require that you are close enough to actually control them and do the damage. Automatic lasers can drop that advancing Assaultron long before it reaches you with it's blades. Improved sniper barrel does a lot of damage, but it is slow and requires constant reloading in close range combat. This is where laser weapons actually shine.
Single shot weapons are better from far range, but that allows the other guy to spray the area with minigun, mininukes or some other heavy weapon. If you can get mid range toward enemy in power armor, then these things will pierce through the armor and drop the enemy quite fast. You will get it down much faster than with single shot weapons. These are extremely useful against beasts like Deathclaw and Behemot. I am mostly using single shot weapons, but I think automatic weapons shouldn't be overlooked from their seemingly low damage.
